pain to power: what every woman should know about menopause, midlife and pain
Counting down to the 2026 Curiosity Series featuring
A/Prof Stuart Derbyshire, Dr Eevon Chia and Ms Susan Tan, will share insights from their respective fields on the complex experience of pain in midlife women, and how the impact of menopause extends beyond the women themselves to their partners, children, families and colleagues. Together, they will explore why greater awareness, understanding and support matter, not only for women navigating menopause, but also for the people who live and work alongside them.
In Singapore, research by NUH and NUS Medicine found that 74.9% of 1,120 midlife women experienced joint pain (arthralgia), while another study identified it as the most debilitating menopausal symptom for nearly one-third (32.9%) of participants. Often associated with muscle weakness, fatigue and other menopausal symptoms, joint pain can significantly affect mobility, daily functioning and quality of life.
Join us to explore why pain is experienced differently, how biological, psychological and social factors shape our experience of pain, and what we can do to better manage pain, maintain function and improve quality of life.
