🍎 Focusing on Individuals in Behavioural Medicine: Why and How? on July 17th, 2025 at 10PM
🌍 Join a Growing movement on getting richer data from intensive longitudinal studies
We are excited to invite you to the next session of the ISBM 2025 Webinar Series, where we welcome Professor Lance McCracken.
Synopsis:
Just like the wider behavioural and medical sciences Behavioural Medicine has built its base of evidence on research designs that include aggregated group data. We love means and other group based statistics from large samples and naturally doubt small N studies. Group data help us to sort out the signal from the noise, the true values from the error, we think. If we are honest, we doubt whether anything can be learned from focusing on one person, or even a small series of persons studied carefully over time. But things are changing. We now see several things that we did not see before: (a) our treatment outcomes are not getting better, certainly not at a rate that we want, (b) our group-based statistics are based on assumptions that are unsupported, (c) we know that we need to focus greater attention on therapeutic mechanisms, and (d) as we do this we realize that mechanisms are more individual than we had assumed. At the same time, there has never been greater opportunity for studying individual people, given the apps, the foot prints we leave, the data that track our every move, and data processing capabilities beyond what we used to imagine. Research into intensive longitudinal data from single subjects, individual people, is needed, is here, and is expanding. This talk will explain the points raised here, because some of them will sound unusual or surprising. A mix of basics, theory, current methods, and future prospects, will be discussed.
🔑 Whether you’re a student, early-career researcher, or experienced practitioner, this is a rare opportunity to gain wisdom from one of the field’s most respected figures.
