This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the foundational knowledge, core competencies, and applied frameworks essential for professional health and wellness coaching practice. Participants will critically examine the historical evolution, scope of practice, and professional identity of health and wellness coaches, with particular emphasis on the distinctions between coaching, advising, and other health-related roles. The course introduces the standard coaching session structure, underpinned by client-centered communication models that foster autonomy, collaboration, and goal-directed change.
Grounded in evidence-based behavioural science, the course applies key theoretical frameworks— including the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), Self-Determination Theory (SDT), and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT)—to inform coaching interventions that promote sustainable behaviour change. Coaching psychology principles, including positive psychology techniques, are integrated to support client motivation, resilience, and wellbeing.
Participants will also explore the intersection between health literacy and health coaching, with attention to the use of validated assessment tools and the integration of social determinants of health (SoDH) into personalized coaching strategies. The course further addresses the ethical, legal, and professional standards guiding health coaching practice, including informed consent, scope of practice, confidentiality, and professional boundaries. Emphasis is placed on continuing professional development, reflective practice, and self-care strategies to promote practitioner wellbeing and sustain high standards of professional conduct.
